How to Block Google AI Overviews

Google's AI Overviews answer your search before you see a single link, whether you wanted that or not. There's no global off switch, and the "disable AI Overview" setting people search for doesn't exist. But you can get link-only results on every search with about two minutes of setup. Here's each method, from quickest to most permanent.

Method 1: The Web Filter (One Search at a Time)

Google ships a link-only view of every search. After you search, look at the filter row under the search box (Images, News, Videos, and so on). Click Web, sometimes tucked under More. The same search reruns as ten blue links, no AI Overview.

Method 2: Make udm=14 Your Default Search

The Web filter has a URL parameter: udm=14. Point your browser's default search engine at it and every search from the address bar skips AI Overviews automatically. In Chrome:

  1. Open chrome://settings/searchEngines (Settings → Search engine → Manage search engines).
  2. Under "Site search", click Add and enter a name (like "Google Web"), a shortcut, and this URL: https://www.google.com/search?udm=14&q=%s
  3. Click the three-dot menu next to your new entry and choose Make default.

Firefox, Edge, and most other browsers support the same custom search engine URL.

Method 3: Extensions That Hide AI Overviews

Browser extensions can hide the AI Overview panel on the results page itself. They work by detecting and removing the panel, which means they need updating whenever Google changes its layout. If you go this route, prefer the udm=14 setup as your baseline and treat the extension as cosmetic cleanup.
